BHNCDSB Advances Educator Learning with AI‑Focused Professional Development Day

Brantford, ON – The Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board (BHNCDSB) hosted a Ministry‑mandated Professional Development Day on Friday, April 17, 2026, focused on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education. The day aligned with the Ontario Ministry of Education’s provincial priority to support educators in understanding AI’s role in teaching, learning, and student readiness for the future.

The professional learning session brought together staff from across the system to explore foundational concepts of artificial intelligence, ethical considerations, privacy and cybersecurity, and the responsible use of AI tools in educational environments. Educators also examined how AI connects to curriculum expectations and assessment practices. The design of the day was informed by educator voice. In late fall 2025, educators across all sectors were invited to complete an AI Teaching and Learning Needs Survey. Feedback from this survey was analyzed and used by the planning committee to shape the focus areas, learning formats, and supports offered throughout the day.

“As a Catholic school system, we are called to approach emerging technologies like artificial intelligence with both wisdom and care,” said Phil Wilson and John Della Fortuna, Superintendents of Education. “Guided by the Church’s teaching, we recognize that AI must always serve the dignity of the human person and support authentic learning. This professional development day was designed to build educator capacity in the thoughtful use of AI, equipping staff to support student learning in ways that are safe, meaningful, and future focused. By strengthening staff confidence and grounding this work in ethical and responsible practice, we are ensuring our students are prepared to thrive in a rapidly changing world.”

Programming included a system wide keynote on the foundations of artificial intelligence, guided exploration of board guidelines for responsible AI use, and targeted learning opportunities tailored to diverse professional roles. The day concluded with self-directed learning options that allowed participants to explore practical applications of AI relevant to their professional practice.

Through this professional development experience, the Board continues to support staff learning related to evolving technologies while emphasizing responsible use, student safety, and alignment with board and ministry policies.

Educators across BHNCDSB come together to explore the future of teaching and learning through AI.
